The Challenge of STEM Education in Ghana and Across Africa
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education plays a vital role in economic development and innovation. Ghana’s education system has experienced significant progress in the last couple of decades, however, the adoption of practical Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) remains low. According to research conducted by the Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Prize (GSTEP), some of the key barriers in STEM education in Ghana include
- Fewer than 10% of schools in Ghana own the necessary science equipment and labs for practical STEM education and over 60% of public schools do not have access to electricity, limiting power of digital equipment.
- 38% of Junior High School (JHS) teachers surveyed never do practical activities with their students and 37% of teachers surveyed engage in practical activities up to three times a term.
- The current public sector funding on education (approximately 14% of national funding) is insufficient for the provision of basic STEM resources and materials.
This lack of access and support is contributing to a widening skills gap, not just in Ghana but across Africa, where countries like Ghana are projected to offer up to 9 million digital jobs and nearly $4 billion in revenue potential by 2030. By that same year, young Africans are expected to make up 42% of the world’s youth and account for 75% of those under age 35 in Africa (UNESCO), making investments in STEM education more urgent than ever.

Our STEM Kits
Upper Primary – Junior High School Level
Ecochest STEM Kits bring hands-on science learning to students across Ghana. Designed to align with the national curriculum, our kits make science fun, engaging, and accessible. Each kit encourages problem-solving, creativity, and a deeper understanding of concepts like measurement, acid-base reactions, mixtures, food and nutrition, preparing students for future careers in science and technology.
Each Kit contains
- Instruction Manual
- Reagents
- Test tubes
- Pipette
- Spatula
- Lab bench
- Activity Sheet
- Cleaning Tissues

Senior High School
Our kits for Senior High School students take on more advanced topics in biology, physics and chemistry. They foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills, equipping students for higher education and future STEM careers.

University Level
Designed for university-level education, Ecochest STEM Kits support in-depth scientific research and experimentation. Covering advanced topics like biochemistry, biomedical science, genetics and genomics, virology, and biotechnology, these kits provide practical experience essential for careers in academia, research, and industry.

Ecochest provides high-quality lab equipment to support hands-on learning in molecular biology and biotechnology. From miniPCR® thermal cyclers and electrophoresis systems to fluorescence viewers and centrifuges, our tools bring real-world laboratory techniques into classrooms and research spaces.
We also offer precision micropipettes, magnetic racks, and illumination kits, ensuring students and researchers have the essential tools for accurate and efficient experimentation. Our equipment is designed to enhance STEM education, fostering technical skills and innovation in diagnostics, genetics, and molecular science.

Bringing STEM to Schools across Ghana
Ecochest Biosciences is making STEM education accessible through hands-on workshops and demonstrations in primary and junior high schools across Ghana.
In partnership with the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), we launched the Science Park Tour—a mobile science workshop bringing interactive learning directly to schools. Our first sessions were held at Grace Gold School (Amrahia) and Saduase KKD Basic School (Dodowa), engaging students with practical experiments.
To further ignite interest in STEM, we are working towards an annual STEM Fair, connecting students, teachers, parents, and industry professionals to explore science and technology opportunities.
Through these initiatives, we’re inspiring the next generation of innovators.

SCIENCE PARK TOUR
The Science Park Tour is an initiative aimed at fostering STEM education in Ghana. This event offers students, parents, and the public a chance to explore science through hands-on experiments while enjoying traditional Ghanaian games.
Designed as a fun and interactive experience, the tour makes STEM exciting and accessible, sparking curiosity and a passion for science in young learners.
In partnership with the Ghana Tourism Development Company Ltd., the event will also promote local tourism, creating a vibrant day filled with food, music, games, and exciting STEM activities!
